Jonathan
Marten has an extensive background as actor, director and teacher.
The former Artistic Director of New York's Friendship Theatre
Co. and the Hampton Roads Center for the Performing Arts, Jonathan
has more than 50 productions to his directorial credit. Among
his favorites are Luv, Standing On My Knees,
Company, Social Security, Tomfoolery,
Blood Ties, The Birds Do It (which he also wrote),
Manly Men: An Evening Chock Full of Lies and Testosterone
(both the 2nd Story and original New York productions), Supernormal
Clutches, the world premiere of Player's Joy,
which he also restaged for the film version, and, most recently, the World Premiere of his wife Tanya's erotic romantic comedy, Euphoric Tendencies.
Jonathan has taught acting and offered seminars for companies
around the country. Prior to returning to ART, he taught scene
study and audition technique at New York City's Creative Acting
Company. His most recent stage appearance was in the NY and World Premiere production of Euphoric Tendencies (which he also directed). Other roles
played on New York and regional stages include Lenny Bruce in
Julian Barry's Lenny, an award-winning performance as
Roy Cohn in Tony Kushner's Angels In America: Millennium Approaches,
Arnold Epstein in Biloxi Blues, Mozart in Amadeus,
Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Drew in Eastern
Standard, Vito in P.S. Your Cat Is Dead, and the
lead role of Fred in the Off-Broadway premiere of The Christmas
Carol Conspiracy: Scrooge's Revenge. Musical appearances
include the national tours of Grease and Godspell,
as well as regional appearances in Personals, and as
Fagin in Oliver.
Television viewers have seen Jonathan in a recurring role of the
soap opera The Edge of Night, and, more recently, on
the ABC sitcom, Spin City, opposite Michael J. Fox. He
also had the starring role of Nick in In The Balance,
and was seen in the Family Channel movie, Mother's Day,
with Malcolm Jamal Warner, Denise Nicholas and Jose Ferrer (Mother's
Day was also notable in that Jonathan was — for the
first time — joined on-screen by his brothers Seth and Ethan,
who also had roles in the film, as well as their brother Richard,
who made a cameo appearance). Jonathan's most recent film appearances
include the feature Eddie, opposite Whoopi Goldberg (also
featuring his brother, Ethan), Woody Allen's Celebrity
with Kenneth Branaugh and Winona Ryder, and Stepmom,
with Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts.
Jonathan is also the creator and co-author (with his partner,
Joe Doyle) of The Reel Life, a play and screenplay satirizing
the film industry, now in development with ART.
Jonathan studied acting with Lee and John Strasberg at the Lee
Stasberg Theatre Institute, with Eric Loeb at the Eric Loeb Studio,
The American Theatre of Actors, The Actor's Institute, The School
For Film & Television, and at Emerson College. Jonathan is
also the proud husband of ART Managing Director Tanya Marten.
